Ford Company introduced a special edition, named 2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak. All new 2016 Ford Ranger has been revealed for the European, Asian and Australian markets, and Wildtrak has just become its most expensive iteration. This is basically Ranger’s flagship model which combines the most aggressive styling with largest number of available tech and convenience features alike.
Under the Hood
Much like rest of the Ranger lineup, 2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak also offers 3.2L turbo diesel 5-cylinder engine which produces 197 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque. However, efficient 2.2L turbo diesel 4-cylinder which makes 164 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque isn’t available with the top tier. What is available, however, are couple of transmissions. Wildtrak initially comes with 6-speed manual gearbox, but you can always choose 6-speed automatic for $2,310 in Australia. Needless to say, like any other pickup that emphasizes on off-roading, Wildtrak comes exclusively with all-wheel drive.
|The Engine range|
|Horsepower @ RPM||158|
|Torque @ RPM||284|

Redesign – Interior & Exterior
2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak boasts with rugged, yet elegant styling. It features some of the cues that rest of the lineup doesn’t get. For starters, Wildtrak is exclusively offered with the double cab configuration and it comes in five different colors. Apart from black, white and grey, only actual colors are silver and orange. 18-inch alloy wheels also do a great job, and compact pickup receives slightly bolstered blacked-out grille with contrasting metallic skid plate.
A few additional metallic accents here and there will make passers by certain that this is no mere entry-level pickup, but one that you have paid dearly for. More on the price later, however.
|Ground Clearance||9 inches (230 mm)|
|Approach Angle||28 degrees|
|Departure Angle||25 degrees|
|Fording Depth||31.5 inches (800 mm)|
Let us first be done with car’s interior. 2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak, as you might have imagined by now, offers unique upholstery as well. Orange fabric trim looks sharp upon grain leather background which is painted black. That way, Wildtrak looks especially good if you order it in above mentioned Pride Orange or Black Mica colorways. 8-inch touch screen display is offered from the get-go, but it doesn’t come with all available features – at least not initially.
Technology package in Australia costs only $600, however, and it adds a rearview camera and adaptive cruise control. It also adds a few more advanced safety bits, but more on that later. Few more convenience and tech goodies make their way inside blue oval’s mid-size truck. You get 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, SYNC 2 infotainment system, satellite radio, etc.
Apart from mandatory set of goodies, 2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak receives already mentioned rearview camera and adaptive cruise control. However, it also gets abundance of other advanced electronic systems like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver impairment monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and more.
2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak Price & MPG
We have been told that the new Ranger is up to 18 percent more efficient than previous iteration. Our guess is that this goes for smaller, 2.2L 4-cylinder engine, and that Wildtrak’s own 5-cylinder doesn’t manage such numbers. It should, however, be able to return around 25 mpg combined, depending on chosen transmission.
2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak is among the priciest utes you can find in oz land as its retail price easily reaches $60,000. There just isn’t enough space for maneuvering as most of its equipment is already included with the price tag.
2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak does its job wonderfully well, but it also costs as much. Full 9 inches of ground clearance and 31.5 inches of water wading maximum can’t really come cheap, and there’s all that mentioned technology to take into account as well. All in all, there probably aren’t many ways to get your hands on a better compact pickup overseas. Ranger, in this form, would even put American compacts to shame, and the real shame is actually the fact that it isn’t available back home.
