The new 2016 Ford Shelby Torino is one more a retro car. The Torino has been a greatly appreciated car in its time but Ford decided to discontinue the model a long time ago, mostly due to the 1970s oil crisis. However, not too long ago rumors started to appear about an upcoming car which would bear the Torino name. While there aren’t that many details about it, it seems that it would be a car developed in cooperation with Shelby and unlike the Mustang which is a rear wheel drive model, the 2016 Ford Shelby Torino would be based on a front wheel drive chassis which would be very different from the original.
This is because Ford wants to make another sports car to compete with the BMW 3 Series coupe and the Audi A5, meaning it would be a more luxurious car than the Mustang. Because it will be a front wheel drive car at its core, the new Torino is very likely going to be based on the same chassis as the Fusion, meaning it will get a high strength steel chassis and instead of the steel body it will likely get aluminum panels in order to save as much weight as possible.

Design – new look & style
The design of the 2016 Ford Shelby Torino will likely be unique but it will certainly get cues from the original. This means it could offer four round headlights in the front, a curvier body than usual as well as a low and wide look. The car will be similar in size to a four-door Fusion but thanks to its pillar-less sides and the massive doors, it will look a bit more athletic than the sedan it will be based on.
Inside the cabin there is going to be enough room for up to four passengers which will get individual Recaro seats. These will be covered in either fabric or leather, depending on the trim level chosen by the customers, and instead of a Fusion or Taurus dashboard, the car will actually get its own design which should be really interesting, especially at this price point. Also, the Torino will be offered with all the usual safety features of a mid-sized sedan but it will also offer a few unique features as well such as a head-up display, ventilated seats and even an automatic parking system.
The Engine range
Engine wise, the 2016 Ford Shelby Torino will be quite impressive because it will have to compete with some really interesting cars. The base model will be the only one to be offered in the front wheel drive form. This will be offered with a 2.3 liter EcoBoost inline 4 offering 300 horsepower and little less than 300 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range the car will be available with two extra engines. The medium spec model will get a 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 offering 335 horsepower and around 350 lb-ft of torque while the top end version of the car will be offered with a 3 liter V6 that will offer over 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. These two will only get a four wheel drive system which first debuted on the all new Focus RS.
All engines will only be available with a 9 speed automatic gearbox which has been in development for quite some time now. The only drawback we see with these is that the Torino will need a more powerful version to compete with all those high performance European coupes and that version may never be released due to the platform’s limitations.
2016 Ford Shelby Torino Price & Release date
The release date for this new model will likely be at the end of 2016 or early 2017 while a production model would not see the light of day until the late 2018. The price, considering it will be an executive coupe, will likely hover around $45,000 for a base model.
