One of the most popular trucks is the new 2016 Hilux Diesel. The Hilux is one of the best trucks in the World and it has been praised in numerous occasions for being reliable and powerful as well as cheap to own. The latest model has been released at the end of 2014 and it is a completely new truck which offers everything you would ever need from it. However, it is not available in the US but in most other countries it comes as the 2016 Hilux diesel.
While a petrol engine is available, the diesel version of the truck accounts for more than 70% of the total sales which is to be expected considering that the diesel version is more powerful and a lot more efficient than the petrol powered truck.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the 2016 Hilux diesel comes with two different types of diesel engines which are aimed at different types of people. The base version of the truck comes with a rather old 2.5 liter turbocharged diesel inline 4 engine which does not offer an intercooler. This particular model offers 102 horsepower and 150 or 190 lb-ft of torque, depending on the transmission of choice. Further up the range, the truck gets a bigger 3 liter turbocharged inline 4 with an intercooler and variable valve timings which offers 163 horsepower and 270 lb-ft torque. These two get either a 5 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic and rear or all wheel drive.
The European version of the truck gets on the other hand smaller engines but with more power than those in Asia. The base model gets 2.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 with 150 horsepower and 253 or 300 lb-ft of torque while the top end version gets a 2.8 liter diesel with 177 horsepower and 310 or 330 lb-ft of torque. These are more efficient than the other two as well as much more powerful at lower revs. A 6 speed manual or offered as standard while a 6 speed automatic is an option. The only drawback here is that the price for the base 2.4 liter engine is more than the price of the 3 liter version.
|The Engine range|
|Maximum output||174 HP @ 3.400 RPM|
|Maximum torque||331 LB-FT @ 1.600-2.400 RPM|
Design – Inside and Outside look
In terms of looks, the 2016 Hilux diesel is nearly identical to the petrol powered version and that’s to be expected considering it features an all new design which debuted in the late 2014. The front end features a unified design with the headlights integrated into the grille but the cabin is similar to the older models. Some markets will also get a chassis model which will offer the cab and a bare chassis where the buyer will get the chance to install different types of beds.
Inside the cabin the Hilux is better than ever. It features much better materials than the older generations and there is also quite a bit more room, both for the front and its rear passengers. The dashboard is made out of a soft material and there are plenty of features available. As standard it only gets air conditioning and a basic stereo system but further up the range, an 8 inch screen with satellite navigation and a surround audio system are available.
2016 Hilux Diesel Price and Release date
The chassis of the new model changes quite a bit over the years so the new Hilux is lighter, stronger as well as easier to make. This allows Toyota to sell the truck at a better price around the World and in certain markets it even costs less than the equivalent of $20,000 while the diesel starts at little over $25,000 which makes it a real deal.
The truck is already available for sale around the World but it will unfortunately not come on the US market because its close sibling, the Tacoma, is for sale there.
The biggest competitors are: GMC Canyon, 2015 Chevy Colorado and Nissan Navara.
