Land Cruiser is, without any doubt, among Toyota’s most prominent and most important nameplates at the same time. Its sales figures have fallen by fifth during the last 15 years, but large luxury SUV compensates on this with its hefty price tag. 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser is an updated version of the luxury off-road full-sizer which brings in new design styling and a few powertrain tweaks as well.
Under the Hood
2016 Toyota Land Cruiser comes in strictly streamlined single trim with only one available, powerful engine. 5.7L V-8 powerplant generates as much as 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque which are being sent to all four wheels via new 8-speed automatic transmission. Timeless icon, as the manufacturer refers to it, offers powerful performance and plenty of capabilities as it manages to tow up to 8,100 pounds. It’s still built for summer and similar rough roads, but performs equally good on modern sleek pavements as well. All in all, it’s a completely rounded off vehicle of some renown.
Design – Inside and Outside look
New design language includes fresh hood, grille, headlamps and rear. Grille is now slightly stronger-looking thanks to thicker chrome bars and bolstered edges. Headlamps have been split in half by grille extension, while the hood seems to be bulkier as well thanks to couple of large bumps and one circular dent between them. Midsection is generally carried over, but features some slight updates too. Finally, 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser features revised heavy tailgate with more prominent chrome garnish with lettering upon it. Tail-lights too, have been slightly enlarged, while bumper remains more or less the same as it was before.
Interior layout has, however, remained largely unchanged. Discrepancies between 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser and its predecessor in this respective field, are negligible. Cabin is yet again furbished with the materials of utmost quality which are more suited for Luxus’ lineup, than for a Toyota badge. Semi-aniline perforated leather seats are offered with front and rear heaters, and front ventilators. 9-inch touch screen display is responsible for all infotainment purposes, and Land Cruiser really offers a lot of them, no doubt. Even rear seat entertainment system with couple of 11.6-inch monitors and DVD player are offered from the get-go.
Toyota’s largest SUV offers plenty of space for both its passengers and cargo alike, but also for smaller possessions. There are no less than 12 cup and bottle holders, and a number of cubicles and door storage pockets.
As it usually is the case with large luxury vehicles, 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser offers superb safety ratings. These are mostly due to SUV’s sheer size and strength, but Land Cruiser doesn’t lack the advanced electronic safety systems as well. Rearview camera and parking sensors are standard, and so is Toyota’s Pre-Collision System which detects a possible collision and optimizes the seat belt performance if need should arise.
2016 Toyota Land Cruiser Price & MPG
Fuel economy is traditionally a category where Land Cruiser utterly fails to deliver competitive figures. Even though it features the new 8-speed transmission, it still returns 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway for a combined figure of 15 mpg. Land Cruiser’s price tag isn’t that popular as well. Even though the SUV exhibits certain level of luxuriousness, Toyota is still hardly a luxury badge and minimal sticker of $83,825 can’t be easily justified.
2016 Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the largest SUV’s available in the markets across the globe. Its sheer off-road capability makes it rather unique as most of its size counterparts aim for street comfort. Land Cruiser too, manages to achieve quite comfortable ride quality, and it’s fitted with the latest tech features available.
The key rivals are Land Rover Range Rover and Cadillac Escalade.
