2017 Kia Sportage US-Version

The Kia Sportage has been released a couple of months ago in Germany but it seems that model was the European version of the car. The 2017 Kia Sportage US-Version has been released a few days ago at the Los Angeles Auto Show and while it is mostly identical on the exterior and interior to the European model, it does come with completely different engines which we have to say that it is disappointing. Why?

Well, Kia decided for an unknown reason not to go with the great 1.6 liter GDI turbocharged mill of the European version. Instead they opted for the same two engines as the older model which is very unusual, especially since its sibling, the Tucson, offers the European engines on the US market as well.

Under the Hood – performance

Engine wise, the 2017 Kia Sportage US-Version is unfortunately not using the great engines of the European version. Instead, the base model gets a 2.4 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol engine which is good for 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The more impressive one is the 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder mill which will provide 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, more than any other car in its class. The good part is that both of these two engines are great and in terms of raw power and feel and even the lesser 2.4 liter unit will get its driver in trouble if he will not be careful.

Both of them come with front wheel drive as standard and both of them will use an upgraded 6 speed automatic which should handle the two engines a bit better. The all wheel drive system will be optional but in any case, the new Sportage will likely gain around 1 MPG on average which is not that bad.

Refreshed Design

EXTERIOR

Let’s move to the design of the car which has been criticized at first but it now started to grow on us. The front end is quite expressive and instead of the rather small grille of the older model, the new generation features its grille mounted right in the center of attention. The headlights are larger than before but slightly more aggressive than those of the European model while the fog-lights come with four LED clusters each. The rear has a cleaner and more angular design with a small rear window and even a hatch spoiler which make for a sportier than usual design.

The entire lower part of the car is then wrapped in black protective plastic which gives the impression that it will be able to handle any type of terrain even though it really is not.

Inside view

Inside the cabin, the 2017 Kia Sportage is not only roomier but also much better looking than before. The materials are quite good for its class and even though there are still plastic inserts in some places, these feel quite nice to the touch. The dashboard is covered in a soft rubbery material while the steering wheel is wrapped in leather even on the base model. The center console has nicely laid buttons on it as well as a 7 inch standard touch-screen or a larger 8 inch unit for the models equipped with the satellite navigation unit.

2017 Kia Sportage US-Version Price

Leaving the drawbacks aside, the new Sportage is slightly larger than before which is mostly thanks to its new platform. It is longer, wider as well as a bit taller but despite all of that, it weighs slightly less than before thanks to the extensive use of high strength steel in its chassis and suspension components.

The car will go on sale in the next few months at a similar price to that of the ongoing model, the only difference being for the base version which may become more expensive due to the added safety features. Depending of the equipment, price range is between $21,600 – 31,000.

Competitors: 2016 Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue.
