2017 Porsche 718 Boxster

The newest luxury car, 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster brings a lot of changes. Firstly, the name is different than all previous Boxster editions. After that, engine range and performance are improved. Rumors about Porsche’s upcoming Boxster started surfacing ever since the end of 2014 when people were talking about a four-cylinder Porsche which would become one of their more interesting cars thanks to the flat-four engine similar to those found in the 356 and their other cars back in the 1950s and ’60s.

Well, the all new 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster has just been released a couple of days ago and the car, while still similar to the older model, is now a completely different type of machine with an all new engine, a different running gear as well as a slightly bolder design.

The Engine range & Performance

This means that instead of boasting the usual flat-six engine found in the previous model or even in the new 911, the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster is now using two all new four cylinder engines. The base version of the car now gets a tiny 2 liter turbocharged flat-four petrol engine which should be good for 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque which is a 35hp and 74lb-ft of torque gain over the older engine.

The S model gets a similar flat-four engine but this time around the displacement went to 2.5 liters, so the car will offer up to 350 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque, a 35hp and 43lb-ft of torque gain over the older flat-six. While this may not seem like much, take into account that the car weighs less and the engines are more efficient thanks to the smaller displacement and the added turbochargers.

Pure Performance

The best part is that both of them will be offered with a six speed manual as standard while Porsche’s PDK gearbox will be offered as an option. When equipped with the latter, the base Boxster will get to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds and up to a speed of 170 MPH while the S version of the car will hit 60 MPH in just 4 seconds and get to 177 MPH which is very impressive for a car that costs quite a bit less than a super-car.

Design – Inside and Outside look

In terms of exterior design, the new Boxster looks a lot more stylish than before even though Porsche kept some of the older panels unchanged. However, the front of the car is new with their new four-LED daytime running lights, wider bumper intakes and new bumper design. In the back the car gets a new bumper as well as a new grille between the tail lights where the Porsche-logo is.

The wheels are new for the 718 but some of them will be shared with the 911. At this point in time there is still no information on an upcoming Spyder but considering all the previous models received one, this should as well.

Refined Interior

Inside the cabin, the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster sports an all new design for its dashboard which offers a curvier design as well as slightly better materials than before. Also, the car now sports Porsche’s latest infotainment and navigation system as standard.

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Price

However, while Porsche did release all the available details about the car, the new Boxster will not be available for sale for at least half a year. Before it will go on the market, the new Cayman will be released.

The price for the base Boxster has been set at $57,000 while the S version of the car will start at $69,000 which is a rather big difference but it should be well worth it.

While the “718” in the car’s name may seem like a pointless number for some people, it actually represents Porsche’s old 718 race-car which managed to outrun the V12 Ferrari cars of its day with the help of a lightweight chassis and a small flat-four engine.
