Despite the fact the BMW 5 Series is a great car, the fact that it is nearly half a decade old makes it lose its ground against its newer and more efficient competitors such as the new CTS or even the Audi A6. In order to recover and get to the top of its class, BMW is going to release an all new model with the 2017 model year which is going to include their new 35up modular platform which will underpin all the cars from the low end 3 Series all the way up to the 7 Series.
Thanks to its, the car is expected to lose as much as 220 pounds and similar weight savings are expected with the 2018 BMW M5 which has already been spied testing on the Nurburgring.
What’s new for 2018 model year?
Just as we mentioned above, the car’s platform will change and this is going to be the largest upgrade over the ongoing model. This means that its rigidity will increase quite a bit which will not only help with cornering performance but it will also allow BMW to decrease the car’s noise, vibration and harshness levels to a rather impressive threshold.
The Engine & Performance
Engine wise, the 2018 BMW M5 is expected to feature the same 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 found in the ongoing generation of the car but this time around the engine will be tweaked quite a bit in order to become more efficient and suffer from less lag under heavy acceleration. This will likely receive new turbochargers and inter-coolers, a revamped fuel system and likely lower friction internals. The end result for all of these will be around 600 horsepower and a shy over 500 lb-ft of torque which is right where the M5 30-Jahre edition was.
While this doesn’t sound like much, the car should be able to provide all that power much lower down the rev-range and on top of that, it should also be able to work quite a bit better not only under track conditions but also on the open road when the mid-range torque is all it matters.
This is expected to make use of a similar 8 speed automatic as before which also means that rear wheel drive will be offered as standard. This time around, an all wheel drive system could also be offered in certain parts of the World in order to compete with the AMG E Class.
Sporty & More aggressive Design
Design wise, the car will most definitely look like an updated version of the current generation which likely means a new front end which will feature BMW’s latest lighting technology such as the laser headlights. On top of that, a new grille and headlights design as well as a new hood are going to take their place on the front of the car. The rear will make use of the usual quad-exhaust system found on all the other M-cars but this time around the car will feature a more subtle diffuser than before.
The interior of the 2018 BMW M5 is expected to be new, so it will likely offer better materials, a better equipment level and BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system which debuted on the 7 Series.
2018 BMW M5 Price
While the car will get a lot of new parts, many people look at the new 5 Series and to the new M5 as major updates of the previous generation which is to be expected considering the exterior and interior design are going to be very similar to those found in the current generation.
The car will likely be released on the market by the end of 2017 when it will likely hit the market for a shy over $100,000 which is where most of its competitors are.
The major competitors are 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 4MATIC and Audi RS7.
