Tiguan is Volkswagen’s compact crossover and younger brother to larger Touareg. It has recently been redesigned and 2016 year models and onward will be next-gen ones. However, that’s not all that the Germans are cooking. 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R promises to be a performance-oriented version of the crossover which is supposed to compete with a number of similar utes that have hit the streets recently.
The Engine – expectations
A number of sources are reporting that 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R is about to borrow Golf R’s turbo four powertrain. 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder is capable enough to maintain steady 300 horses and 280 pound-feet of torque. These numbers are solid, but still can’t compete with the figures that Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA45 or Audi RS Q3 are offering. Still, there’s some room for bumping up these numbers and it remains only to be seen whether Volkswagen will do that. As far as rest of the drivetrain goes, Tiguan performer will be offered with all-wheel drive and 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, it seems.
Design – speculation and prediction
Design-wise, we are supposed to look at both the new Tiguan and CrossBlue Coupe concept presented in Shanghai. 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R will borrow conventional model’s frame, but when performance cues are concerned, cross coupe is here to jump in. Fusion of the two should yield a fine end-result, but don’t expect anything too radical. After all, VW is neither luxury nor performance badge. They will likely keep things simple and offer a nicely rounded compact crossover with just enough pizzazz to separate Coupe R from the conventional Tiguan lineup.
Interior is something that can’t be exactly pinpointed at this point. After all, Tiguan Coupe R doesn’t arrive before the late 2017. Our guess is that it’ll feature the same cabin layout as conventional models, but offer different, sportier materials. For starters, it should come with Alcantara leather seats and steering wheel, and it should feature aluminum inlays as well. Feature list will likely remain similar as well. It is still unknown which features will 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R claim as its own unique goodies, but overall, it should come with heated seats and steering wheel, large touch screen display and optional navigation, all available connectivity options and other more refined tech features.
Tiguan Coupe R probably won’t offer too many in terms of advanced electronic and active safety features. It will come with extended mandatory goodies list which includes anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, airbag system and stability control. However, apart from that, rearview camera, blind-spot information system, parking sensors and, possibly, adaptive cruise control, don’t expect much more.
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R Price
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R likely won’t manage to return respectable fuel economy figures, but then again, it does offer a 4-cylinder engine. Low twenties figure should be expected for mpg combined ratings, but let’s wait a little bit more for that. More important than fuel economy are Tiguan Coupe R’s acceleration figures.
It claims 5.1 second time for 62 mph from standstill which are more than respectable figures for a compact crossover of any kind – let alone one coming from neither luxury nor performance-oriented house. When it finally arrives, Tiguan Coupe R will likely start from around $35,000 or thereabouts.
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Coupe R will be a fine addition for German maker’s SUV and crossover lineup which is currently in aggressive expansion. New design and cabin will go a long way in order to establish the car in the markets, but R models are still mostly about performance. That’s why new coupe crossover will boast with very good figures in all performance segments and shouldn’t fail to deliver in other fields as well.
