BMW M9 is the latest concept car by German carmaker. The only actual super-car BMW currently has on the market is the i8 which is very fast by any standards but it does remain a hybrid which is meant for those looking to be efficient while still being quite fast for a normal car. Their only other super-car was the M1 which was unfortunately a short-lived model that could not put BMW in the super-car market.
However, they do plan to change that with the introduction of a new model. This was going to be based on the i8 and it was meant to compete with the Audi R8, the Huracan as well as all the other super-cars in the $200,000 price range.
This model would be released on the market as the BMW M9 and so far there are not that many details about it. However, an artist already rendered the i8 based super-car and the result is stunning. The lines are aggressive and even though it shares some of the design cues with the i8, the car does look a lot like the original M1 in terms of allure which is really cool for it.
BMW M9 Engine & Specs
In terms of engine, the BMW M9 production vehicle will not get the powertrain from the i8 but rather something a lot more impressive. This will be the first super-car in the last 30 years to get a longitudinally mid-mounted inline 6 engine which will then be coupled to a pair of electric motors. The 3 liter twin-turbocharged inline 6 will power the rear wheels while the two electric motors will power the front wheels independently.
The total output for the car is expected to be between 600 and 650 horsepower and up to 700 lb-ft of torque. The inline 6 engine will send its power to the rear wheels via a twin-clutch automatic and thanks to the two electric motors, the car will actually be all wheel drive.
Early performance figures suggest that the upcoming M9 could get to 60 MPH in less than 3 seconds and get up to a maximum limited top speed of 210 MPH. These numbers would actually make it faster than its closest competitors and it would certainly give BMW a massive boost on the super-car market.
Design – Inside and Outside look
Just as we mentioned before, the design of the M9 is going to be something unique and even though we only have a few render shots of a concept model, we truly believe that the car will be able to resurrect the M brand in the super-car world. The front end will be similar to that of the i8 with the aggressively styled headlights and the small twin-kidney grille but the sides as well as the back will be all new.
These will be redesigned so the car will be able to generate a lot of downforce without having to compromise on speed and thanks to the lightweight carbon fiber construction, it should be able to keep up with the fastest cars out there.
BMW M9 Interior
On the inside on the other hand we could see a very similar interior to that of the i8. However, it is expected that the BMW M9 will get a more stylized instrument cluster which this time could make use of chronograph-like dials that will set it apart from the rest. On top of that it could get a removable hardtop similar to what Koenigsegg currently has.
BMW M9 Price and Release date
The release date is unknown but most likely we will see a concept of the production vehicle some time at the end of 2017 while the car will not be sold until 2018. The price, while unknown at this point, will very likely be similar to that of all the other super-cars out there so it is safe to assume that it will cost around $250,000.
